Onychomycosis
Fungal infections of toenails (onychomycosis) is mostly caused by dermatophytes, rarely by molds. The discoloration, thickening and fragility of the nail are signs of fungal infection, but also other skin and nail diseases, so if you notice such changes you should go to a dermatologist and perform a mycological examination. It is estimated that about 50% of people with thickened and discolored fingernails or toenails suffer from fungal infections.
Toenails infection mostly is scecondary to a fungal infection of feet (tinea pedis). According to research, tinea pedis affects up to 42% of people, and toenail infection – 21%. It is more common in men (except for candidiasis), rarely in children, but very often in older people. This disease affects equally all races.
Fungal infection of the nails may occur, for example:
- at the pool
- in the sauna
- by wearing someone’s shoes or socks
- by using other manicure tools
Fungal infections of the toenails can be caused by systemic diseases:
- diabetes
- obesity
- anemia
- hormonal disorders
- gastrointestinal disorders
- immune system disesases
- cardiovascular diseases
- use of steroids
- chemotherapy
- use of antibiotics
